The World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva was the venue for the 77th World Health Assembly. WONCA was represented by WONCA Executive Board member and EQuiP member Maria Pilar Astier Pena from Spain, WONCA Past President Anna Stavdal from Norway and WONCA CEO Harris Lygidakis.
They engaged in key discussions on enhancing primary health care, integrating multi-professional teams, managing non-communicable diseases, and addressing the urgent threats posed by climate change. Concurrently WONCA has finalized its WHO triennial collaborative plan and is considering new projects with WHO for the 2025-2027 period aiming to continue and expand its influence in global health initiatives
The WONCA team took part in discussions on defining the role of family medicine in global healthcare, digitalisation, medical education and public health among other topics. Maria Pilar took to the floor representing Global family doctors and made a statement on prevention and community interventions for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), through early detection, health literacy and self-care, and continuity of care by family doctors. People with NCDs are also one of the patient groups vulnerable to the effects of climate change, especially from extreme heat and from air pollution, and climate mitigation and adaptation will be among the future areas to be focussed on as WONCA continues to work with its members and partner organisations to advocate for stronger family medicine.
